Professor Philip Hugenholtz’s research focuses on molecular characterisation of host-associated microbial communities, including those of healthy and diseased people.
There is a growing appreciation that pathogens do not work in isolation but are part of microbial communities, even in parts of the body traditionally considered to be microbe-free.
This area, dubbed “clinical ecology”, serves to complement and inform more traditional pathogen-oriented research.
