At the end of 2016, Ash Haque’s Malaria Immunology Laboratory and the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute ran a crowd-funding campaign they called “FIGHT THE BITE”. Ash and his team filmed a series of light-hearted campaign videos that were released via social media to seek funds to help them in their goal of boosting immunity to the malaria parasite, Plasmodium. As you can see from this video link, Ash and his team will go to any length, even as far as dressing up as bad-tempered malaria mosquitoes, to drive their serious research forward. Donations came from far and wide. With these funds, Ash’s lab has been able to support a biomedical student from the Netherlands, Lianne Lansink, to come to the lab for one year, to examine immunological memory and novel mechanisms of parasite control in malaria. Lianne promises to FIGHT THE BITE while she is here in Brisbane!
A pledge to AID goes directly into the research of issues that impact the lives of many people and their families.
